Presentation

Thanks mainly to the creative genius and the efforts of Luis González y González, crystallized the idea, January 15, 1979, to found El Colegio de Michoacán (Michoacán’s college), devoted to the social sciences and humanities. The college was founded in Zamora, average city in northwestern Michoacán, Mexico, respondion to the need to create centers of academic development in the providence.
The college began with two centers: Estudios Antropológicos and Estudios Históricos (Anthropological Studies and Historical Studies). Four years later the college counted with two more centers: Estudios Rurales and Estudio de las Tradiciones (Studies Rural and Traditions’ Study. In 2001 the college is extended to the nearby town of La Piedad, where established the Centro de Estudios Arqueológicos (Archaelogical Studies) and over there in 2002 is created the Centro de Estudios de Geografía Humana (Center of Human Geography Study).
The vocation to regional studies, which go beyond state lines, comes from the beginnings of the institution. The topics of research, plant research-professors and students are from different parts of the Mexican Republic and abroad.
Six presidents have led the School: Luis González, Andrés Lira, Brigitte Boehm, Herrejón Carlos Rafael Fernández Diego Sotelo and from 2009 to 2015 the Dr. Martín Sánchez.

Study Centers

Research at the Colegio de Michoacán

Since its founding in 1979 the research at the Colegio de Michoacán has been one of its main objectives. In the sixth article of the Legislative Building says explicitly that the mission of the College is: to develop and impulse scientific research in their field of expertise and disciplines related to it, trying to link this research to regional and national develop; guide scientific research to promote and manage with the public, private and social organization, knowledge transfer, in terms for the purpose by the applicable regulations, disseminating and publishing scientific information about the advances in its field of specialty is register, and the results of research and work undertaken; contributing with the National Science and Technology referred to the Law on Science and Technology in congruence with the Sector Program and the National Network of Research Groups and Centers, to associate scientific work and the formation of the human resources of a high level to knowledge develop and care of the needs of Mexican society.
Nowadays carried out 71 projects, published 44 articles and edited 30 books per year.

Center of anthropological Studies (Centro de Estudios Antropológicos)

The Integrated Degree Program includes Master's and Doctorate. The master is schooled with thirteen courses, five research seminars and a seminar for undergraduate work, and two quarters of research in the field with advice from a teacher. Its purpose is to provide a general education, where students participate in achieving a common language of social science itself but with a major in social anthropology. The integral formation of the anthropologist includes update of concepts and concerns of the discipline, a goal that is achieved through the Permanent Seminar on Anthropological Thought in Mexico and working groups involving students.
The program is derived from long experience, with emphasis on field work and direct research with primary sources (observation, informants, archival work). In the master are dedicated six months to these activities and the doctorate, a year and a half.

Center of Historical Studies (Centro de Estudios Históricos)

The Center of Historical Studies at El Colegio de Michoacan emerged in 1979 under the auspices of a select group of teachers and the direction of Luis Gonzalez y Gonzalez, as an alternative to graduate programs in Latin America in general, in particular in Mexico.
Since 1999, the Center of Historical Studies offers a doctor’s degree, under rigorous standards, contributes to the formation of historians who wish to develop in the fields of research, the teaching and diffusion of knowledge. It is important to say, this doctorate was awarded in August 2011 by CONACYT as a program of international competition.
Over 33 years, the faculty of the Center for Historical Studies has been characterized by having in its ranks historians highest academic, whose work has contributed in teaching and writing of history in Mexico, Spain and Latin America.

Center of Rural Studies (Centro de Estudios Rurales)

The Integrated Graduate in Social Sciences specializing in Rural Studies (PICSER) maintains and strengthens as an interdisciplinary guiding principle, which is embodied in a closer relationship between the graduate program and research areas of the CER, which brings together members of the faculty since the mid-nineties, reconfigured as LGAC and which are:

• Agricultural History, dynamics of population and territorial heritage
• Environment and food systems
• Migration, Mobility and Transnational Processes
• Perspectives of rural development policies and social movements
• Subject, body knowledge and contemporary urban and rural areas

Center for the Study of the Traditions (Centro de Estudios de las Tradiciones)

Gilberti Maturino Project, Spanish-Indian law project: Pedro Murillo Velarde and the Mundus Symbolicus Project are three great research collective projects of the Center for the Study of the Traditions from El Colegio de Michoacán. The three research have the main objective the translation, editing and study of the texts; in the first case, the Franciscan friar Maturino Gilberti who wrote doctrinal and grammatical works in P'urhépecha during the sixteenth century; in the second and third cases, the translation of Canon Law et Cursus of Pedro Murillo Velarde indici (1696-1753) and Filippo symbolicus Picinelli Mundus (1604-1686), both neo-Latin texts which enjoyed a wide diffusion and influence in the culture of New Spain.

Center for Archaeological Studies (Centro de Estudios Arqueológicos)

The Center for Archaeological Studies (CEQ) of the Colegio de Michoacán, AC since January 2001, shares with the other centers the central objectives of our institution: research and teaching in the area of social sciences and humanities, an interdisciplinary in theoretical and methodological dialogue with other disciplines is also aimed study of man.
The Center for Archaeological Studies is now offering its Master of Archaeology program, aimed primarily at archaeologists as a way of specialization in archaeological research and in particular in the region of western Mexico. This Master is also open to professionals from other social sciences and related disciplines, according to the laws on the subject, the Federal Law on Monuments and Archaeological Areas, Artistic and Historical, 1972.

Center of the Study of Human Geography (Centro de Estudios en Geografía Humana)

Since its official opening in February 2002, the Center of the Study of Human Geography (CEGH) opens the possibility of providing the country with an institution whose main objective is to promote the study of social phenomena, economic and cultural rights in their territorial dimension, by integrating research lines and a graduate program, and to disseminate the results. To support these tasks, have established three lines of generation, innovation and application of knowledge:

• Construction of geographic space: economics, politics and culture
• Territorial Configurations urban and economic processes
• Processes in the landscape

From September 2004 starts the Masters in Human Geography, in order to form researchers and professionals to analyze the social and cultural phenomena from a spatial perspective and interdisciplinary in order to provide knowledge to propose solutions aimed at tensions that arise between communities or social groups for the adoption, exploitation, processing and significance of physical and abstract spaces they occupy.
